Italian stone pines line the entrance drive, pruned as in Rome to highlight their distinctive silhouette. A bosque of London plane trees revives the ancient horticultural practice of pollarding, a pruning technique seldom seen in the United States. Superb large specimens were individually selected and pre-purchased to guarantee their visual impact upon installation. After first learning about the structure of trees, students craft scale models inspired by their own idea of the perfect tree. Using these creations as a starting point, students will be challenged to design and build a fantasy treehouse within its branches.

Designed by the innovative team at AUX Architecture, this contemporary masterpiece seamlessly integrates the existing landscape, creating a harmonious interplay between indoor and outdoor living. Situated atop a steeply sloping site in Los Angeles, California, the Windsor Residence showcases the innovative design of AUX Architecture. This captivating house seamlessly integrates an existing retaining wall, overcoming the challenges of extreme topography, poor soil conditions, and a limited budget. “Cars should go in the dark, and people in the light,” remarked Antoine Chaaya, partner-in-charge at RPBW. Transitioning to the private quarters, the bedroom is a true oasis of tranquility. Expansive windows flood the space with natural light, while a plush sectional sofa and a cozy armchair create a cozy reading nook.

Select architecture students from USC get to live in the house as part of an architect in residence program. Working for the design firm of Meyer and Holler, Kennedy never gained the prominence of some of LA's better-known architects. Kennedy's architectural influence continued in a different direction when he became a professor of architectural design at the University of Southern California. His own architectural projects were as diverse as designing movie sets and working as a consultant for the design of the Pentagon in Washington DC. Los Angeles has a lot of interesting buildings designed by famous names like Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Richard Meier, Rudolph Schindler and Greene and Greene, and they're scattered all around town. Although it's debatable what makes a piece of architecture significant or interesting, the structures included here are interesting due to their visual impact, historic significance, and accessibility to the public.

Horticultural techniques throughout combine function with pleasure, artifice with nature, and modern technologies such as those required for planting over structure, with ancient horticultural practices such as pleaching. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents. Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. They also installed a grass cloth ceiling treatment and sisal rug to add texture. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House.

California's history is embodied within the rocks of the central courtyard fountain. Originally part of the ocean floor, colliding continental plates thrust them up to become the Sierra Nevada mountains only to be eroded by glaciers, leaving gold deposits behind. Visitors to the Getty pass through the Fran and Ray Sculpture Garden, the first encounter with the art collection, before boarding the tramcar up to the main campus. The Center’s sleek, modern facilities are available to rent for seminars, marketing events, private parties and more. These distinctive stones are as unique to California as the gold rush, each the result of the same geologic process. Most emphatically, however, the fountains of the Getty bring to visitors and staff the timeless and sensual pleasures of water in an arid environment. The museum also responded appropriately during the lengthy California drought by turning off the fountains to conserve water. Even when not in use, though, the sculptural form of the fountains, harkening both to the surrounding architecture and the natural mountain landscape, remain artful elements within the landscape. Paul Getty Center stands atop the Santa Monica Mountains as a bastion of art, culture, and design for all people.

John Nava's tapestries featuring a combination of saints and community members line the interior walls. It is the largest collection of hanging tapestries in any Catholic church in the United States. Extended through March 12, 2022, Cairo Modern showcases works by Egyptian modernists from the 1920s to the 1970s, half a century of rich architectural production that complicate our present understanding of global modernism. The exhibition introduces audiences to key architects from the period, as well as examples of their works commissioned by the state and the city’s burgeoning bourgeoisie. Modernism in Cairo reflected the aspirations of the new classes that formed after Egypt’s 1919 Revolution who embraced the Modernist house or apartment as the materialization of new notions of class, identity, and modernity.

The firm’s award-winning portfolio includes environmentally and socially responsive educational, residential, and institutional projects ranging in scale from single-room artist workspaces to campus master planning. Kevin Daly Architects is particularly recognized for reclaiming and transforming sites characteristic of the urban fabric, turning generic background buildings into models of community identity. Structural advances in technology have resulted in skyscrapers that are taller than ever before. Through discussions, trips to New York City skyscrapers, and design challenges, students explore the structures and systems that make such supertall buildings possible.

The project balances openness and modernity with privacy and tradition, providing spaces that cater to individual users while respecting the rural context. The home features a central courtyard that connects interior and exterior spaces, serving as a welcoming area on ordinary days and expanding for festivities during special occasions such as making traditional Chung cakes for the Lunar New Year. The design includes a central staircase, which serves as a focal point of the house and offers a space for children to play without disrupting private areas. Throughout the Windsor Residence, the design team has masterfully blended the home’s architectural elements with its natural surroundings, creating a harmonious and visually striking living experience. From the dramatic exterior staircase to the thoughtfully curated interiors, every detail of this remarkable property reflects the owners’ love for modern design and their appreciation for the stunning California landscape.

The program concludes with a challenge for students to create a structure that their favorite animal or creature might enjoy. This program explores how public art such as sculptures, murals, and other installations make public spaces more interactive, lively, and fun. Students will visit some amazing examples in New York City and learn about others around the globe, exploring their own artistic ideas through 2D and 3D design activities. For their final project, students will design and create a model of a public art installation of their own.
